ääne- + koski (“rapids”). According to Terho Itkonen, the ääne- element comes from a Sami root *eanē- "big", compare Northern Sami eanas (“most”), later corrupted by Finnic settlers into the word ääni (“sound”) (in the local dialect pronounced as eäni) and interpreted as referring to the sound of the rapids. The settlement is named after the rapids.
