Etymology

Lexicalization of earlier ált +‎ -l (ablative suffix). The original ált is from Proto-Ugric *ᴕltɜ (“across, over”) (compare Northern Mansi (ūltta, “across, over”), Eastern Khanty (uʌti, “across, over”)), from *o (“that”) +‎ (ablative suffix) +‎ (locative suffix).[1][2][3]
