Vietnamese

Etymology

Trần (2004) (apud Vương, 2021) proposes that đểu initially meant a "porter using carrying pole"; both đểu and đểu cáng (porters) (compound of đểu & cáng (palanquin > palanquin-porter)) now denotes "scoundrel, cad" because poorly-educated porters often dealt unfairly with each other and competed with each other for customers by means of violence and cheating.
