Learned borrowing from Latin Suantouitus, from Old Polabian *Svątevit, which contains Proto-Slavic *svętъ (“holy, sacred”) + *-o- + *-vitъ. Modern Slavic languages usually calque the Old Polabian word.

     The same Dazhbog in Arkona was called Svetovit, after all, he was the giver of crops, in whose honor the most glorious annual festival was celebrated after the harvest, like the Belorussian bogach, worshipped at the same time.
