Etymology

Furnée connects it with ἐξαίφνης (exaíphnēs, “on a sudden”) and ἄφνω (áphnō, “suddenly”). Probably of Pre-Greek origin. Compare αἰπός (aipós), αἰπεινός (aipeinós).
