From an earlier unattested *γραυρος (*gravros) (with assimilatory deletion of the (*r)), from *γλαύρος (*glávros) (with assimilation (*l) > (*r)), from Byzantine Greek ἔγγραυλος (éngraulos, sardine) (with metathesis of the λ (l) and ρ (r)), from Ancient Greek ἔγγραυλῐς (éngraulis, European anchovy).[1][2]
