From δημο- (dimo-, demo-) +‎ -σκόπηση (-skópisi, -scopy)[1] or a learned borrowing from German Demoskopie.[2] See δήμος m (dímos, municipality, community) & σκοπός m (skopós, goal). A word creation with Greek combining forms to replace the loanword γκάλοπ n (gkálop, Gallup poll).[3]
The initial sense of the synonym σφυγμομέτρηση f (sfygmométrisi) -attested since 1891-[4] was "measuring pulsation".[5]
