Ancient Greek

Etymology

Inchoative form (inchoative suffix -σκω (-skō)) of an assumed primary verb εὑρω (heurō) and assumed cognate εὑρέω (heuréō), which donated all the tense forms save the present and the imperfect. The exact formation of the word's root is unclear, appearing to be a reduplicative of a Proto-Indo-European *wreh₁- (to find). Cognate with Old Irish ·fúar (preterite of fo·gaib (to find)) and Oscan ϝουρουστ (wouroust), as well as possibly Old Church Slavonic обрѣсти (obrěsti, to find), Old Armenian գերեմ (gerem, to capture, take prisoner).[1]
