Inherited from an unattested Byzantine Greek blend of θώς (thṓs, “jackal”) + ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx, “fox”). Old Armenian թեպեկ (tʻepek), թոբէկ (tʻobēk) is borrowed from the same source.
