According to Frisk, originally a present participle of a verb *κελέω (*keléō), which would be a denominative of *κέλος (*kélos, “rising up”). Formally, the latter could be compared with Proto-Slavic *čelo (“forehead”), and further connected with κολώνη (kolṓnē, “hill”), both from Proto-Indo-European *kel (“to raise, lift”). It does not belong to κελοί (keloí, “woods”). Furnée assumes a pre-form *κελέϝοντες (*keléwontes) as a variant of *κελεμος (*kelemos), which stands behind -κελεμνο- seen in ἀμφικέλεμνον (amphikélemnon, “chair carried by two men”).
