From Proto-Indo-European *ḱéytor, from *ḱey- (“to lie down”). Cognate with Latin cunae, cīvis, Old Armenian սէր (sēr), Hittite 𒆠𒀉𒋫𒊑, 𒆠𒀉𒁕𒊑 (kittari), Sanskrit शेते (śéte).[1]
