From the same root as λιτός (litós, “supplicatory”) and λιτή (litḗ, “prayer, entreaty”), said root of unknown origin, but the fact that the λ often makes a preceding short vowel into a heavy syllable, as well as the frequent doubling of the λ after the augment ἐ- (e-), makes it likely that it comes from an earlier *slit-, and thus perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *(s)leyt-.
MacBain compares Scottish Gaelic lide (“syllable”);[1] another potential cognate is Lithuanian liẽsti (“to touch”), see there for more discussion.[2]
