Explained as "ὀϝι-σύπη", like the synonym οἰσπώτη (oispṓtē), with an unclear second member. There is clear evidence for οἴσπη (oíspē, “sheep dung”), but it is difficult to decide whether the form with "υ" or the form without it is secondary. According to Beekes, the word is undoubtedly from Pre-Greek.
