Ancient Greek

Etymology

Galen's explanation is a folk etymology based on the similarity with πέμπω (pémpō, to send, dispatch). Blanc proposed a reduplication πελ-πελ- from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (gray), the same root of πελιός (peliós, livid) and πελιδνός (pelidnós, pallid). Anothery theory by Furnée links this adjective to Georgian პეპერა (ṗeṗera, ancestor, forefather), showing nasalization.
