Beekes is hesitant to espouse any derivation (even the usual Pre-Greek) and leaves the origin open. Traditionally taken as a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *peyH-, which is also the source of Latin pīnus (pine) and Sanskrit पीतुदारु (pītudāru, kind of tree). Compare also Albanian pishë.
