Some sources trace the word back to Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w- (few, little), in which case it would be cognate with Old Armenian հաւ (haw, beginning), Latin paucus, Old English fēaw (English few), but Beekes leaves the etymology open, saying that there are no certain cognates outside Greek.[1]
