Etymology

The suffix is a reminiscent of πύελος (púelos) and σκόπελος (skópelos). Furnée further compares φάσκωλος (pháskōlos, leathern bag) and βάσκιοι (báskioi). Solmsen hesitatingly compared σφάκελος (sphákelos, spasm, gangrene), suggesting a common meaning "drawn together, tied together". Cognate to Albanian bashkë (together).[1] Beekes claims that there exists a variant in "-λλ-", and that this proves that this word is Pre-Greek, but this is dismissed by Nikolaev on the grounds that the variant in question does not actually exist.
