From χαμαί (khamaí, “to the earth, on the earth”), a frozen case-form of χθών (khthṓn, “earth”), itself from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm. Compare πάλαι (pálai), παραί (paraí). The ending could be formed after the antonym ὑψηλός (hupsēlós).[1]
