Uncertain. Perhaps derived from Old Slovak kocúr and/or Carpathian Rusyn коцу́р (kocúr, “tomcat”), whence the surnames of Polish Kocur and Slovak Kocúr, although semantic connection unclear. Cognates include Hungarian Kucora, Kuczora and Serbo-Croatian Куцура / Kucura.
