Bulgarian
Etymology
Uncertain. Attested as Ὀγγλος (Onglos) in Byzantine Greek.
Resembles:
- Proto-Slavic *ǫgъlъ (“corner”), parallel to (Standard) Bulgarian ъгъл (ǎgǎl). Akin to Proto-Germanic *anguz (“narrow”) (whence comes the endonym of the Angles), Latin angulus (“angle”), Ancient Greek ἀγκύλος (ankúlos, “crooked”).
- Oghur *oŋul (“opposite side, exterior”), akin to Turkish ön (“front”), Bashkir уң (uñ, “right”), Yakut уҥa (uña, “opposite bank of a river”), from Proto-Turkic *oŋ- (“to set in order”).
It is not known if the toponym was given by the Bulgars (or their Slavic allies) themselves or continues an earlier name inherited by the local population.
