First attested in year 1084±16 as тъмꙋтороканѧ (tŭmutorokanę, Gsg). From earlier *Тъмѫторкань (*Tŭmǫtorkanĭ)[1] or directly[2] from Turkic tamantarkan, from (taman) and ?𐱃𐰺𐰴𐰣 (tarqan). Compare Byzantine Greek Ταμάταρχα (Tamátarkha).[3][4]
