Related to бакша (bakša, “elder amongst Kalmyk priests”), from Kalmyk бакшы (bakşy, “shaman”). From Old Chinese 博士 (*paːɡ zrɯʔ, “teacher, mentor”) > Mandarin 博士 (bóshì, “doctor, academician”). The suffix -ша (-ša) is apparently from 士 (shì, “scholar”), or 師 / 师 (shī, “tutor”). Compare тайша (tajša, “Kalmyk leader, elder”).
The origin of аба- (aba-) is unclear.
