It may be possible to link the element ап- (ap-) with Finnish epä-, Estonian eba- (“deceptive; such that is not the way it is supposed to be”), compare Udmurt ӧв-, ӧвӧл (öv-, övöl, “not, no”), Komi-Zyrian абу (abu, “no, not, not present”). Moksha апалямс (apaľams, “to ruin; to maim, cripple”), апаляфкс (apaľafks, “stain”) can be considered of the same origin. Eastern Mari овлаш, овылаш (ovlaš, ovylaš, “to hex, spoil using magic”) could be related.^[1]
