Inherited from Proto-Slavic *brъzda, whence Old Church Slavonic бръзда (brŭzda, “halter”), Czech brzda (“brake”).
бръ́зда • (brǎ́zda) f (dialectal)
The singular form has mostly gone out of use. Only the earlier dual бръзде (brǎzde) (often reanalyzed as a sg. neuter) is formally attested within dialects.
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *brъzda, further origin uncertain: perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrusdʰos, but a complicated Slavic etymology has also been proposed.
