Belarusian
Etymology
- Not clear. Russian вадкий "wet, waterish", adverb. вадко is known to be used in Pskov and Smolensk oblasts. Ukrainian вадкий means "harmful". There is no connection with Russian вадья "little lake, swamp, puddle, source", because the latter is borrowed from Komi vadja<vad "swamp, quagmire".[1] It is not clear whether there is a connection with Macedonian вада "ditch", Bulgarian вада "hush", Serbian-Croatian вада "ditch, creek". Possibly from ваʹдкі<вадкіʹ<вада́; compare to Russian Smolensk водкий "wet, waterish". Possibly to ва́да "fault" with further reconsidering under the influence of вада.[2]
