Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic врѣмѧ (vrěmę), from Proto-Slavic *vermę < *vertmen, from Proto-Indo-European *wertmen. Displaced native Old East Slavic веремѧ (veremę). Cognate with Sanskrit वर्त्मन् (vártman, track, course).
