Per BER, a recent derivative, probably from contamination of ве́зя (vézja, “to web, to braid”) and въже́ (vǎžé, “rope”). Formally equivalent to Proto-Slavic *ǫzъ (“bond, tie”) (whence Old Church Slavonic съвѫзъ (sŭvǫzŭ, “link, conjoinment”)), *ǫza (“chain”) (whence Old Church Slavonic ѫза (ǫza, “shackles, fetters”)).
