Borrowed via a Turkic language from Persian جیران (jêrân), from Middle Mongol (ǰērän, antelope),[1] from Proto-Turkic *yẹgren (yellow, chestnut).

Also compare Russian дзере́н (dzerén, dzeren, Mongolian gazelle), from Kalmyk зеерң (zeerñ, antelope) or Mongolian зээр (zeer, gazelle), from Proto-Mongolic *jexeren, commonly derived from Proto-Turkic *yẹgren (yellow, chestnut), whence also Kazakh жайран (jairan, dzeren, Mongolian gazelle).
