Inherited from Proto-Slavic *žьdati (to wait, to await), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *g(e)id-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeydʰ-. Compare Old High German gīt (avarice) and Old Prussian gēide (they are waiting).[1]
