Erzya

Etymology

Cognates may include the element аль- (aľ-) in Moksha альбе (aľbe, power). It is unclear if there is a connection with -вал (-val) in Erzya вий-вал (vij-val) or with -ал- (-al-) in Tundra Nenets (ŋaleko, very big in size) (appears similar to Turkic, cf. Tatar олы (olı, older, big)). Eastern Mari ал (al, bodily strength) is usually explained as deriving from Chuvash хал (hal, power) or Tatar хал (xal, power).[1]
