Borrowed into Russian from a language of the Caucausus; compare Mingrelian ქიფური (kipuri), Ossetian къӕпы (k’æpy), Karachay-Balkar гыпы (gıpı). The ultimate origin is unknown. Relation with a potential Kipchak substrate *köpür-, akin to Turkish köpürmek (“to foam”), is unknown.
