From Proto-Mordvinic *koməś, perhaps inherited from Proto-Uralic *kuśɜ (~*kojmɜćɜ) (“twenty”). Compare Udmurt кызь (kyź), Hungarian húsz, Northern Khanty хөс (høs). Alternatively, but less likely, compounded from Proto-Uralic *koje (male) + *śe (this).
