• Of expressive origin: An iterative form of dialectal Bulgarian ку́там (kútam), къ́там (kǎ́tam, “to hide, to shelter”) + -я (-ja), probably from a t-extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to cover”). Akin to Greek borrowing кути́я (kutíja, “box”).
