From Proto-Slavic *kъsьnъ, of uncertain origin. Possibly from an earlier *kъtsьnъ with meaning spoiled, passed its deadline, related to Bulgarian кисна (kisna, “to soak, to ferment”). According to Al. T. Balan, from къ (k, “towards”) + сън (sǎn, “dream, sleep”).
