Inherited from Proto-Northeast Caucasian *ḳVlʡV ( ~ ḳ_w- -ɫ-,-ʕ-) (“white”): cognate with Ingush кӏай (kʼaj), Chechen кӏайн (kʼajn, “white”) and perhaps the first part of Udi кӏо-нак (ḳo-nak, “leucoma, wall-eye”). According to Xajdakov, -ла (-la) is a determinative suffix, as in кӏюла (kʼuˤla, “thin”).
