Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kȫkel (drake), equivalent to кӑвак (kăvak, blue, grey) + -ал (-al).[1][2] Yegorov also suggested it may be from an onomatopoeia ква-ква (kva-kva),[3] however this is considered incorrect by Eren and Fedotov.

Cognate with Turkish gövel (green headed (of ducks)) and Bashkir күгәл (kügəl, drake).
