Fossilized plurale tantum of Proto-Slavic *lędvьje (attested as Old Church Slavonic лѧдвиѩ pl (lędviję, “loins”)), probably spread from western dialects. Compare Serbo-Croatian ле́ђа pl (“back”). Semantic shift analogous to Bulgarian коля́но (koljáno, “generation, lineage”) (literally: knee).
