From Proto-Mordvinic *lomań, wherein *-ń may be a noun suffix, as in e.g. Erzya сёвонь (śovoń, “clay”). The further origin is uncertain. Sometimes compared with Proto-Samic *olmōńčë, whence Kildin Sami олмэнч (olmenč), олма (olma, “person, human”).
