From Proto-Slavic *mъskъ, probably of Paleo-Balkan descent, akin to Albanian mushk (“mule”), Aromanian mușcă (“mule”), Latin mūlus (“mule”) (<*muslos), Ancient Greek μυχλός (mukhlós, “he-ass”). Further origin is unclear. Meyer hypothesizes a possible relation to the ethnonym of the ancient people Mysoi and/or Muški.
