From Proto-Mordvinic *ožə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic *wiša (poison; green, yellow), whence Finnish vihreä (green), Livonian vīri (yellow), Eastern Mari ужар (užar, green). Ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wišás (poison, venom).
