From Proto-Mordvinic *ovks~*oŋks, inherited from Proto-Uralic *aŋe (“opening, incision, deepening”) and suffixed with *-ks. Cognate with Eastern Mari аҥ (aŋ, “hole; mouth”), Udmurt ым (ym), Komi-Zyrian вом (vom), Komi-Permyak ӧм (öm), Hungarian ajak (“lip”).
