Chuvash

Etymology

Cognate with Bulgar بَلُو (belüv) which from the Proto-Oghur *bel-ig but instead of being a descendant, Chuvash form seems to be from Proto-Oghur *bel-ik. Because g irregularly didn't decrease in Chuvash (as in *elig>الُو (elüw)>алӑ (ală) or *bitig>*bitüw>пӗтӳ (pĕt̬ü)). The real cognate must be Chuvash палӑ (pală) with an intermediary unattested Bulgar form. Compare Hungarian bélyeg and cognate with Common Turkic *bel-gü, Kazakh белгі (belgı), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bel-.

Noun

палӑк (palăk) (plural палӑксем)
