From Proto-Slavic *puďati, dialectal пужа́ть (pužátʹ), cognate with Ukrainian пужати (pužaty), Belarusian пужаць (pužacʹ). Presence of evolution Proto-Slavic /ď/→Russian /г/ testifies to the borrowing from the Old Novgorodian or Old Pskovian dialects where this transition was regular,[1] compare dialectal (Pskov) рога́ть (rogátʹ) 'give birth'.
