From Proto-Mordvinic *pərəməms (*pərə- + *-mə- + *-ms). The first component may be the same as in Erzya пурнамс (purnams, “to collect, compile, gather”) and possibly connected to Proto-Finno-Ugric *parwɜ ~ *parɜ-wɜ (“crowd, group”), whence Finnish parvi (“group of animals”), Northern Khanty пөр (pør, “flock, group”).
