Etymology

From Middle Chuvash *pŭri, earlier Middle Chuvash *pŭrai̯, Old Chuvash *buɣzai̯,[1] ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bugday.

However, Róna-Tas et al. reject the connection of the Chuvash word with the Common Turkic *bugday and instead connect it with Proto-Slavic *pyrъ, Ancient Greek πυρός (purós) etc.[2]
