Inherited from Old Slovak rostlina, with the -стл- (-stl-) → -шл- (-šl-) shift akin to that of the formation of Polish rosły and subsequently roślina, as well as Belarusian расьлі́на (rasʹlína). Cognates include Czech rostlina, Carpathian Rusyn ростлина (rostlyna) and Slovak rastlina.
