Borrowed in 18th century (no later than 1782) from some Western European derivative of Late Latin Saracenus, from Koine Greek Σαρακηνός (Sarakēnós), further origin uncertain (see there).

Replaced earlier forms срацин (sracin), срацинин (sracinin), срачинин (sračinin), and сорочинин (soročinin) from Old Church Slavonic срацинъ (sracinŭ), a hypercorrected (-ra- instead of -ara-) form of the same ethnonym.
