Etymology

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic спѫдъ (spǫdŭ, modius, bushel; vessel of this size), Russian Church Slavonic спудъ (spudŭ); compare Slovene spọ̑d (bucket) (tonal orthography), Old Polish spąd (bucket), from Proto-Slavic . More distantly cognate with (and per Trubachev, borrowed from) Middle Low German span (wooden bucket, dry measure) (genitive spannes); also cognate with Danish spand (bucket), Old Armenian փունդ (pʻund, vessel, case), Lithuanian spañgis (bucket) (genitive spangė̃; possibly a borrowing from Low German). Eventually from Proto-Indo-European *spondʰos.
