Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish (tılısım, tılsım, “talisman; magic, sorcery; ghost, apparition”), from Arabic طَلَاسِم (ṭalāsim) - plural of طِلَسْم (ṭilasm, “enigma; talisman”), from Ancient Greek τέλεσμα (télesma, “talisman; sanctified object”). Cognate with Macedonian таласам (talasam). Compare Turkish tılsım (“charm, talisman”).
