Inherited from Old Ruthenian ужи́ти (užíti), possibly influenced by or borrowed from Old Polish użyć. By surface analysis, у- (u-) +‎ жи́ти (žýty).

The forms ужи́ти (užýty) (used after consonants or at the beginning of a clause) and вжи́ти (vžýty) (used after vowels) differ in pronunciation but are considered variants of the same word.
